About Us

The Marlborough Multicultural Centre is a non for profit organisation dedicated to fostering social unity and a sense of belonging. We achieve this by collaborating with government and community services to establish a secure and inclusive space for diverse multicultural communities.

In 2006, in response to significant demographic changes, Marlborough emerged as one of seven regions selected to spearhead a pioneering "Settling to Initiative" project initiated by the Ministry of Social Development in partnership with various central and local government agencies. This endeavour aimed to address the challenges faced by newcomers and their integration into the local communities, ultimately revealing a pressing demand for assistance and information.

Since its inception in January 2007, our centre has remained steadfast in its commitment to bringing people together, providing companionship and assistance, and championing the celebration of cultural diversity within the Marlborough community.

What drives us:

We are a non-political organization that collaborates with both mana whenua and the government. We hold a deep respect for and appreciation of all ethnic backgrounds, firmly opposing any form of racism.

We are committed to upholding the E Tū Whānau values, which are rooted in fostering a safe and inclusive multicultural New Zealand. These values encompass six key principles:

  • Aroha: Giving without expecting anything in return.hands
  • Whanaungatanga: Cultivating connections and relationships.
  • Whakapapa: Understanding one's identity and sense of belonging.
  • Mana/Manaaki: Elevating the dignity of others through support, growth, and constructive challenges.
  • Kōrero awhi: Encouraging positive communication and actions.
  • Tikanga: Conducting ourselves in alignment with our core values and principles.

It is universally recognized that multicultural communities are valuable assets, just as our relationships and networks are cherished resources.

We hold deep respect for and highly value the contributions of those who have paved the way before us, recognizing their invaluable impact on our journey.

Our mission is to take the lead in advocating for and celebrating cultural diversity within our community. We aim to achieve this by facilitating access to tailored services for multicultural communities, with a special focus on those who are vulnerable or facing social and financial challenges.

The primary goal of the Marlborough Multicultural Centre is to create a secure and inviting space where migrants, newcomers, and local residents can collectively embrace their cultural diversity. Our aim is to ensure that individuals of all ethnic backgrounds feel encouraged to engage fully within the Marlborough community, fostering a deep sense of connection and belonging.

Annual Report

Our Annual Report 2022/2023 details the activities and outcomes of the MMC in the last financial year.

What we do:

At our centre, we offer a safe space for newcomers to Marlborough, providing them with essential information, assistance, and opportunities to connect with others. Additionally, we curate a variety of events and activities that highlight and celebrate the rich tapestry of our multicultural community. Often referred to as the initial step for newcomers, our services act as a bridge and referral agency. We not only provide advocacy but also guide individuals toward relevant agencies, often collaborating with them to facilitate a smooth settlement process.

Our journey of empowerment, celebration and advocacy include dance workshops, cooking classes, language weeks celebrations, morning tea sessions, art workshops, let’s talk about business sessions, basic car mechanics sessions for female newcomers, health and fitness programs, various cultural celebrations and observances, multicultural parades  and the highlight of the year – Marlborough Multicultural Festival, a festival of colours, sounds and spices bringing thousands of people together every year to celebrate the many cultures that call Marlborough Home.
